Our Research Work

At EqualyzAI, our research is rooted in a singular vision: to create artificial intelligence that understands, represents, and serves Africa. We believe that AI should not be one-size-fits-all. To be truly impactful, it must be trained on the linguistic, cultural, and contextual realities of the people it serves.
Our research efforts are focused on solving real-world problems by pioneering generative AI solutions tailored for low-resource settings. By building models that reflect African languages, voices, environments, and experiences, we are not just contributing to technological innovation—we are reshaping the future of AI for global inclusion.

Focus Areas

We are advancing multimodal AI by collecting and training on diverse datasets across text, audio, image, and video. Our research is grounded in building generative AI systems that are both contextually aware and locally relevant.

Text

We develop large language models trained on under-represented African languages, using augmented and code-mixed data to improve performance in tasks like question answering, summarisation, and translation. These models are designed to understand dialectal variations and cultural nuances.

Audio

Our audio research focuses on speech technologies including:
1. Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) for low-resource African languages.
2. Speech-to-Speech (STS) translation systems that retain tone and meaning across languages. This work enables voice-based applications for accessibility, education, and communication in local dialects.

Image

We are building image generation models trained on Afrocentric datasets to ensure visual representations reflect African identities, cultures, and environments. These models generate context-aware imagery from textual prompts and have applications in media, education, and digital storytelling.

Video (Coming Soon)

We are exploring ways to incorporate video datasets into our generative models to further extend the reach of AI in sectors such as health communication, education, and advocacy campaigns.
